Having spent the year individually mapping the new frontiers of modern music, Burnt Friedman and Atom Heart come together for Midnight Sound, their second full length release as Flanger. Cologne's Burnt Friedman ought to be a household name among lovers of the finest in latin, dub, electronica and, well pretty much any of the numerous styles he's turned his hand to, really. His albums this year for Pole's ~Scape label (Just Landed) and his own newly founded Nonplace imprint (Con Ritmo) have brought him to wider attention than ever before, though he's been recording his unique organic electronic mutations under various nom de plume for more than a decade (Nonplace Urban Field, Drome, Some More Crime). Friedman has long been interested in percussion, not as a clattering backdrop to musical notation, but as the music's core structure, and his ear for production is simply divine. His next Nonplace EP - Love Songs - is released in October, to be followed by another album early next year. Known to his mother as Uwe Schmidt, Flanger's insanely prolific other half is probably better known to you as either Atom Heart, LB (aka Lassigue Benthaus) or Señor Coconut, or even Geeez'n'Gosh, Los Samplers or Subsequence. Formerly of Frankfurt, he now lives in his adopted home of Santiago de Chile. His variety of styles and sounds sprawl from early acid experiences via excursions into ambient until the boundaries and definitions finally disappeared in 1994 when he founded his own label, Rather Interesting. Señor Coconut's recent album of Kraftwerk covers in a latin style, and LB's electro covers of rock and funk classics (on Output) pushed the possibilities of electronic music still further. Atom Heart has released more than 150 different records including collaborations with Bill Laswell, Haruomi Hosono, Tetsu Inoue and Pete Namlook. Flanger was founded in 1997, the sublime creation of two artists for whom defying convention is the only reason for being. Flanger's music blurs the borders between real, fake and hyperreal in the search for the ultimate, non-repetitive soundscape, until electric and acoustic finally become one. Flanger is ~ Burnt Friedman: playing Gretsch Drums, Percussion/ Programming Atom Heart: playing Rhodes, Vibraphone, Motion Bass / Programming'
